A Cheap Meal Plan for a Family of 4

For two adults and two children, the tightest full-week plans we built (breakfast, lunch and dinner) fit a $70 target at Aldi or Walmart and an $80 target at Kroger. A dinners-only plan can start at $40.

What the family-of-4 budgets look like

All figures below come from the CentMenu planner using dated US price tables. Each plan is seven days for two adults and two children, and each is built to fit its budget when you buy whole packages. They are estimates, so use them as a starting point rather than a promise.

Browse them all on the family of 4 hub.

Choosing a tier

Think of the budget as a tier, not a single price. The $70 tier is the tightest one that worked for this household at Aldi, so it asks for more cooking from scratch and fewer extras.

If you want more variety, snacks or branded items, the $100 weekly meal plan for a family of 4 has room for them, with a checkout estimate of $66-$96. Notice that the ranges overlap: a looser budget does not always mean a bigger bill, it means more choice.

Cheaper stores versus the Aldi base

Our base store for standard plans is Aldi, which was the lowest or tied for lowest of the three stores we model. Walmart gives a similar tier ($70) with a narrower checkout range, which can make it easier to predict. Kroger needed $80 for the same household.

Prices change by region and week, so compare the shopping list on a plan page with your own store before you commit. The store hubs for Aldi, Walmart and Kroger list every plan for each.

The dinners-only option

If breakfast and lunch already work for you, plan dinner only. The $40 dinners-only plan for a family of 4 estimates $29-$41 at the checkout, and the Walmart version lands at $33-$40.

This is a good fit when children eat school lunches or you already have cereal and sandwich supplies. See all of them under dinners-only plans.

How to stretch the week further

  • Cook one big-batch dinner (soup, chili, pasta bake) and plan it as lunch the next day.
  • Let children help with simple prep. They are more likely to eat what they made.
  • Use frozen vegetables for the nights when fresh ones would spoil before you reach them.
  • Pick one meatless dinner. A vegetarian family-of-4 plan at Aldi is built to a $60 target on the vegetarian hub.
  • Check the pantry list before shopping, so you do not buy a second bottle of oil.

A realistic note on children

Appetites vary by age and by growth spurt. A plan is a framework: if a teenager eats double, add a package of rice or pasta rather than abandoning the plan. It is not medical or individual nutrition advice, and you should always check packaging for allergens.

FAQ

How much is a cheap weekly meal plan for a family of 4?

Our tightest full-week plans fit a $70 target at Aldi and Walmart and $80 at Kroger, with checkout estimates given as ranges on each plan page.

Does the plan include snacks?

The tighter tiers focus on breakfast, lunch and dinner. A looser tier such as the $100 plan leaves more room for variety.

What is the difference between the two totals?

Food eaten is what the family consumes in the week. Checkout is what you pay for whole packages, so it is usually higher.

Can I swap meals?

Yes. Replace a meal with one that uses the same packages, and recount the checkout total before you shop.
